Neighbors Replanting Neighborhoods/
Citizen Forester
The mission of CITIZENS Urban Greening and Community Forestry Program is to educate local communities, particularly within urban neighborhoods, about the aesthetic, environmental, economic, health, psychological, and the social benefits of trees.
This community building program engages all people in protecting and increasing our urban forests to create a more natural, livable and healthier environment, and one that fosters connectivity to the neighborhood and to the environment.
Goals of the Neighbors Replanting Neighborhoods Program:
- To provide tree and native habitat education through service learning opportunities to people living in low-income areas of Miami-Dade County with a focus on affordable housing projects;
- To increase the numbers of trees planted by neighborhoods in the right-of-way, common community space, private property targeting neighborhoods with the lowest tree canopy;
- To assist residents in planting trees and native plants on their private property;
- To maintain and protect existing trees, particularly in neighborhoods with the lowest tree canopy;
- To empower and support citizens and community leaders alike to take personal responsibility for their urban forests by educating, training and supporting them to plant and care for trees in their neighborhoods;
- To engage whole neighborhoods: adults, children and volunteers in the tree planting experience;
- To work in collaboration with Miami-Dade County, cities, other non-profits, neighborhoods, school, colleges, civic and community groups.
