Over
25 volunteers from the summer FIU Upward Bound program came to
participate in the maintenance of Citizens' native plant nursery
and demonstration garden. Volunteers learned to identify native
plants, problematic invasive exotic plants, and worked in plant
propogation in the nursery. Another 25 volunteers planted trees
for the elderly and handicapped in the Roads neighborhood and
staked, mulched, and fertilized over 100 trees stretching three
miles along US1, from Douglas Road (37 Ave) to the Vizcaya metrorail
stop. This workday completed a series of four Citizens-sponsored
environmental projects taken on by high school students enrolled
in the Upward Bound program.
