On October 13, 2005, Citizens took the CSW students from Citrus Grove Elementary in Little Havana, Virrick Park in Coconut Grove, and Holmes Elementary in Liberty City on a field trip on the Miami River, courtesy of the Miami River Commission. Students and their families revisited the historic trip up the river on board the Island Queen. During the trip they learned about the history and ecology of the Miami River, Tequesta Indians, early pioneers of the area, and the system of local and international commerce that functions along the river, providing livelihood for many.

Funded by The Children's Trust, the Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management, Miami-Dade County Water & Sewer, Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste, the South Florida Water Management District, and the Miami River Commisstion.
