Citizens hosted students from South Miami High for the Fairchild Challenge Immersion Day to work on a long-term restoration project on Virginia Key. The Fairchild Challenge is an annual, environmental education competition hosted by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Students compete through science projects, environmental research, ecology, fine arts, photojournalism, graphic design, gardening, habitat restoration, community outreach, creative writing, research projects, foreign languages, debate, ethnobotany, film making, ecology and other disciplines.

Funded by Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management, Miami-Dade County Water & Sewer, Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste, and the South Florida Water Management District, Miami-Dade College Enviornmental Studies Department, and the National Tree Trust.
