Gloria Alejandra Antia was born in Cali, Colombia and immigrated to the United States in 1996; she began her environmental career at Miami Dade College’s - Wolfson Campus where she attended from 2000 until 2003. After receiving her Associated Degree she transferred to Florida International University where she obtained a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Sciences. She recently assisted a training at the Smithsonian Institute Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia on biodiversity conservation and field techniques.
In 2007-2008 while working as a naturalist for Miami Dade County Parks, Gloria worked with the Sea Turtle Release Program at Crandon Park. She conducted presentations to elementary school groups and adults on the endangered sea turtles, a program designed to help the species survival rate. At Cradon Park Gloria also worked as a field naturalist and ecotourism guide in the Bear Cut Preserve of Key Biscayne educating the public about South Florida’s ecology, with an emphasis on the fossilized reef, coastal hammock, mangrove forest and sea grass beds found within the park.
During the past three years Gloria has worked with Citizens for a Better South Florida as a Community Science Workshop Lead Educator providing hands on environmental education to diverse groups of children. At Citizens Gloria has assisted and coordinated groups of volunteers for the ecological restoration of Virginia Key which includes the reintroduction of endangered species, such as Prickly Ash.(Zanthoxylum coriaceum.) Currently Gloria is the Interim Director of the Urban Greening Program dedicated to increase the urban tree canopy of Miami and educate the community about the economic, environmental, social and aesthetic benefits of our Urban Forest.
